An enraged Enzo Fernandez had to be held back as he was taunted by a supporter in the wake of Chelsea’s Carabao Cup final defeat to Liverpool.
Virgil van Dijk scored the only goal of the 64th League Cup final and the header came in the 28th minute of extra-time to seal Liverpool the title for a record tenth time, keeping the club’s hopes of a historic quadruple alive.
Chelsea, meanwhile, was guilty of squandering a number of inviting opportunities and Raheem Sterling had a goal disallowed for offside in a tight first half at Wembley.
The result meant Mauricio Pochettino’s wait for a trophy in English football continues and the Argentine was close to tears at the full-time whistle, before appearing to snub Chelsea owner Todd Boehly in the stands.
Chelsea’s record signing Fernandez, largely ineffective in midfield, was similarly emotional after the game and looked dejected as made the long walk to pick up his runners-up medal while being consoled by officials and dignitaries.
And as Fernandez made his way up the steps behind Mykhailo Mudryk, one Liverpool fan tried and succeeded to get a reaction out of the 2023 World Cup winner, yelling, “Enzo, unlucky lad!”, while laughing hysterically.
The furious midfielder immediately turned in the direction the comment came from and aimed a death stare at the supporter in question before being led away by a Chelsea team-mate.
Speaking on Sky Sports’ commentary, ex-Manchester United and England right-back Gary Neville branded Chelsea ‘billion pound bottle jobs’ as the west London club allowed a golden opportunity for silverware slip though their fingers.
Pochettino felt the remark was ‘unfair’ when asked about Neville’s criticism at his post-match press conference, insisting it was ‘impossible to compare’ the two teams at Wembley.
‘I don’t hear what he said but I think if you compare the age of the two groups I think it’s similar,’ the Chelsea head coach told reporters.
‘But look, I have a good relationship with Gary and I don’t know how I can take [that comment]. It’s his opinion but I respect his opinion.
‘Of course, we made a few changes with [Conor] Gallagher and [Ben] Chilwell coming off in extra-time, but it’s true, we didn’t keep the energy that we finished with in the second half.
‘I don’t know how you can describe this situation but for sure I feel proud of the players, I think they made a big effort and we are a young team and nothing to compare with Liverpool because they finished with also a few young players.
‘I think it’s impossible to compare and he knows it.’
